NYQUIST holds off EXAGGERATOR
Kentucky Derby is in the books as NYQUIST holds off EXAGGERATOR. After a fast pace NYQUIST (the favorite) held off a fast closing EXAGGERATOR. One of my top picks SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS ended up 5th but only a bit out of 3rd.
SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS had a terrible trip and came from way back. He is definitely a horse to watch for in future races. EXAGGERATOR also proved he could run his race on a track other than “sloppy” which he got in the Santa Anita Derby.
I was very impressed by NYQUIST’s ability to go fast early and still have enough in the tank to hold off EXAGGERATOR. If he runs in the Preakness NYQUIST will be tough if he can come back off just two weeks rest, because the Preakness is 1/16th of a mile less on a track that does not favor deep closers.
The unlucky SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS is a very good horse who will win some big races in the future, but I’m not sure it will be the Preakness or the Belmont. He is a horse to use in upcoming races because his odds will be good. I don’t believe many horse handicappers will know what a good race he ran in the Derby from the difficult #2 post. Keep a close eye on where he shows up next.
Good luck to NYQUIST as he tries to capture the second jewel of the triple crown, the Preakness is in just two weeks.
