Wine, grapes, growth, and dying. All are intertwined like a vine full with grapes. Since man first crushed grapes into wine he has contemplated. No matter how haltingly man has considered the mystery of the universe and his place in it. Quotes inspire contemplation, over a glass of wine (or not), I offer some of my own musings:

“Bitter grapes,
No matter how skillfully processed,
Lead to bad wine.
Yet, bitter souls,
If lovingly nurtured and transformed,
Can blossom into the most magnificent of vintages.”

“Diamonds, the hardest of all natural things, are forged by enormous pressure.
A man’s spirit is likewise honed to razor sharpness by life’s repeated trials and challenges.”

“A painter creates art by skillfully dabbing paint on a canvas.
A sculptor creates art by chiseling away chunks of rock.
A writer creates art by penning words on paper.
A landscaper creates art by planting a tree and pruning a hedge.
It is both by adding and removing that beauty is revealed.”

“Some Eastern religions and philosophies legitimize Seppuku and other forms of ritualized suicide.
Yet, the most sorrowful song may have a happier ending, but even if not we should listen to the words and chords until the final note.”

“When the moon is a crescent,
Turn your gaze skyward, and tilt your head just so–the moon smiles down at you.
Be happy and smile back.”

“Beauty of skin is fleeting; Helen of Troy is dust now, as are Cleopatra and Marilyn Monroe.
The memory of their faces may linger in art and myth, but their absence leaves room for the next usurper to that throne of vanity.”

“When in the depth of despair,
and it is truly darkest,
just look up,
you will see the stars.”
